Mike, Karen, Ted, and I drove 30 min. north to Florence, OR. The street of cute shops and restaurants made for a fun afternoon, ending perfectly for Penny with peppermint ice cream.
The Florence Marina is filled with fishing vessels. This one was selling tuna from its deck.
The next day the rains arrived, so we went to this cute science and culture center. It was amazing for the small community of Reedsport.
It you click on this photo and enlarge it, you will see the Weyhauser symbol under the mouth of the bottom figure on this totem indicating they sponsored it. This was once a thriving lumber town, but is now a shadow of those days.
There are many wood sculpturors along Hwy 101. This bench shows a higher level of skills than most.
There is an observation deck at the top of the Umpqua Discovery Center. Turnstile bridges are common in the rivers along the coast.
We believe this was a fishing guide taking the guys out on the Smith. Later at lunch we overheard another group talking about how bad the fishing was. Mike caught two big salmon from the shore of the Umpqua, a few miles further south, in two days. He cooked one for us. Penny is not a big salmon lover, but when it is fresh, she agreed that it was delicious!
The Schooner Cafe is attached to the Discovery Center. We split fresh crab melts and fresh clam chowder! Delicious!
The Smith River lies along the north of Reedsport and is named for Jedidiah Smith. It is a tributary of the Umpqua.
Ted identified this as a member of the dogwood family. Penny had never seen these berries on a dogwood before. Pretty.
