From Portland we drove to Winchester Bay on the Southern Oregon Coast. There we met our friends Mike and Karen. It is a place we have been often, and have always enjoyed. The RV Park is situated on that small jut of land at the top of this aerial photograph which I borrowed from the Salmon Harbor Marina web site.
Situated between Salmon Harbor, seen here, and the Umpqua River, it is extremely well done with large, level sites, well tended grassy areas, and crisply trimmed shrubbery. It is not the cheapest place to stay, but it is both relaxing and invigorating at the same time.
Across the harbor are some good restaurants. As expected, most of them specialize in seafood, however, there is also a good pizza joint. This is the view out our dining area window. Certainly good for the digestion.
Not far from the RV park are these dunes. Dune Buggies, four wheelers, and dirt bikers are encouraged here since they destabilize areas where an invasive grass is trying to get a foothold. These broad, bare, sandy areas are the native condition here. Native vegetation is limited to the tops of these short hills where sand is shallow and the roots of young trees and shrubs can access better soil.
