Hounslow, England and Heathrow Airport 5-17-2009

We decided to take a break today and do some housekeeping items. We took a city bus, using our Oyster cards, to Hounslow. We went to a shopping area there. Don't you just love this?
This is the inside of the shopping center. Most of it doesn't look this good. There was one store that reminded us of the old Meier and Frank that used to be in Portland, OR. This is the outside mall area. Note the McDonald's. There was a KFC and a Subway. We ate lunch in a local bakery. Food was one of Ted's goals. He had a lamb and mint pasty for lunch. I bought some batteries, toiletries and a cheap small rolling suitcase to replace my other carry-on. I will figure out how to travel better yet. Products are the same ones as in stores at home.
There is a sign here that says this was once a Roman road.
These are typical duplexes in the area. Saw very few free standing homes. Most cars were parked in front of houses behind brick walls, where a lawn should have been. Lace curtains on almost every window were very striking. There were two stores in the shopping area selling such window coverings.
This is a typical side street that looks a little more prosperous. From signs on stores this seems to be an Indian and Polish area.
After this trip we took another bus to the National train station from which we will depart for Bournemouth on Thursday. It is on the southern coast. My former boss and his wife, Ron and Pauline, recommended it. We bought our tickets. We are getting pretty good at this bus, Underground, and train thing.
Our hotel is the Renaissance by Marriott. It advertises the views of Heathrow as a plus and the desk clerk announced proudly that she was giving us a room with this view. Here is what we see from our window. We were a bit skeptical, but are really enjoying the show. We have never seen such a variety of countries represented by the planes. Double pane windows help keep the noise down. The vibration when the A380s and Jumbos take off can't be masked, however. We haven't been here much to mind.
