Local Color, Newport, OR 5 Aug 2013

Steve, Ted, and I rode our bikes to the dunes and the estuary and then explored north of the Yaquina Bay Bridge.  It is such a dominant feature of the area.  Although we have all been here more than once, the area is always interesting.  We saw a helicopter repeatedly hover over the east end of the bridge and then it moved close to the water near the bridge.  We never figured out why, but it was fascinating to watch.
The beach north of the jetty is wide and flat.
The Yaquina Bay Lighthouse, located near the bridge, was only in service three years.  It was decommissioned when the Yaquina Head Lighthouse was put into service.  It is the last remaining wooden lighthouse in Oregon and one of the few in which the keeper's residence was actually a part of the lighthouse.  It is said to be haunted.  The Coast Guard lookout tower is used.  We then went to Nye Beach to look in the shops, buy bread for dinner, and enjoy the beach there.  Steve and Jenny then hosted us for a delicious dinner and fun conversation about traveling.
